Avatar: The Way of Water has taken the number one spot at the domestic box office for the fourth consecutive week, beating stiff competition in the form of M3GAN along the way. The Avatar sequel took in $45 million in North American ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo, while M3GAN earned a better-than-expected $30.2 million in its debut weekend.

Directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound), and written by Akela Cooper (Malignant, The Nun 2), M3GAN asks the age-old question of what would happen if a highly advanced companion robot was set to evil. The film was originally predicted to make between $17-$20 million at the US box office, but positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth helped it beat those numbers and become the first film since 2012’s Devil Inside to earn over $30 million in the first week of a new year.

As for the Avatar sequel, it currently has a global haul of $1.707 billion, making it the seventh-biggest movie in cinema history and usurping the position that has been held by Jurassic World for several years.
